My parents have been trying to get me into track since 8th grade—but it just never clicked. That is, until this year. As a sophomore, I made the Northwood High School track team. Since I was joining a little late because of basketball, the coach asked if I could help fill a spot in women’s high jump. I didn’t exactly have a choice, so my response was: “Heck yeah!”
Enter Luke—my unofficial coach and actual teammate. He’s a pretty cool guy who seriously knows his stuff when it comes to track. (Thanks, Luke! Not that you’re reading my silly blog.)
My first Gold in Hi-Jump
Not too shabby for someone with two whole days of high jump experience under their belt!
Turns out, Luke’s coaching worked. After just two practices, I competed in our first meet of the season… and somehow snagged my first gold. If I’d known it would be this easy, I probably would’ve listened to my parents years ago!
It hasn’t all been gold medals, rainbows, and unicorns this season—more like mat burn, wind burn, sunburn, and the occasional bruise from landing on the bar instead of over it. Let’s just say high jump keeps you humble.
Still, I’m really proud of what I’ve accomplished so far and excited to compete at regionals. Huge thanks to my coach Luke, our Athletic Director Cameron Vernon, and all my teammates who’ve cheered me on (even when my landings weren’t exactly graceful).
